Comparing Capitalisms

Theoretical course

Summary:
While there seems to be no viable alternative to capitalism, we find manifold alternatives within capitalism. Since the historical victory of capitalism over socialism, there are ongoing debates about the questions of how and why capitalisms differ, what differentiates the “liberal” or “market” capitalism in the United States and United Kingdom from the “Rhenish”, “coordinated” or “organized” capitalism in Germany, and whether this capitalist diversity will prevail or whether globalization leads to a convergence of the diverse capitalist models. In the course, we will compare capitalist countries as well as theoretical approaches explaining capitalist variety (e.g. Varieties of Capitalism, National Business Systems). Looking on country differences, we will especially focus on the institutional foundations of national financial, production, corporate governance and industrial relations systems in countries such as Germany, Japan, United States, United Kingdom, and France.

Participants are expected to show up on a regular basis and to read all the required material in advance of the sessions. To meet the requirements for earning a certificate (Schein) participants are encouraged to give a presentation of one of the topics (Referat) and to write a paper (Hausarbeit). Course language is English.
